Microplastic recovery

We perform size-discriminating microplastic recovery analyses using spheres, fragments or fibers. These types of analyses can inform you on the efficacy of your filtration system or the recovery rate of your protocol. We utilize our in-house reference microplastics, including fibers and fragments as small as 50 and 10 µm in diameter, respectively.

Acquire recovery data in four simple steps

Step 1: Consultation

To understand your analysis needs, we first discuss your project and provide you with a quote. This is an important step in ensuring high-quality performance data of your system.

Step 2: Sample or filter shipping

Following our consultation, you ship your filter(s) to our laboratory where we perform the recovery experiment.

Step 3: Recovery analysis

The recovery analysis is carried out using our in-house microplastic reference materials EasyMP™.  The analysis can be performed using either fragments, fibers or beads. Each analysis consists of four replicate tests.

Step 4: Data

After having determined the microplastic recovery of your system, we prepare a comprehensive dataset and performance report.

What is microplastic recovery?

= recovery rate

In essence, recovery is a simple equation that defines the percentage of particles recovered during the execution of a protocol. In other words; it defines the loss of microplastics. For example, if you know you added 100 microplastics to a sample, and your analytical method detects or recovers 90 microplastics, then the analytical recovery is 90%.

Beads

Microplastic beads are versatile tools in microplastic research, offering multiple benefits. Their inherent sphericity and vibrant color options, enhances visibility for effective analysis.

Fragments

Fragments are by far the most prevalent type of environmental microplastics, and are available in the 10-100, 100-500 and >500 µm size ranges in various colors and polymer types.

Fibers

We prepare fibers in specified quantities and size distributions. These fibers are available in diverse polymer types, colors, and morphological features, starting from a length of 50 µm.

Analytical recovery within size groups

Using colored reference microplastics, we can determine the analytical microplastic recovery within size groups, of particles as small as 10 µm (0.01 mm) in diameter. By visually distinguishing the spiked microplastics from other generic particles in the sample, we are able to evaluate the analytical recovery over a broad range of particle sizes. This critical performance data reveals potential limitations of your filter, helping you identify areas for improvement.

How efficient is your microplastic filter?

We perform state-of-the-art microplastic recovery analyses, that help you determine the filtration efficacy of your microplastic filter. Our analyses include size discriminating analytical recovery data on microplastic fragments, fibers and beads down to 10 µm in diameter.
